God made calculators for a reason.

Ever feel unambitious?

Mr Lannis is using this book to reteach himself math.

In his spare time.

Yes, really.

He voluntarily takes a couple hours out of his Sunday morning to go over a unit, pencil scratching on scrap paper, mumbling to himself while his coffee gets cold.

Yes, really.

No, it's not for work or something career-oriented. It's my understanding he's doing it because he dicked around a lot during high school, then figured out in college that school is not that hard if you just try (gasp!), feels he wasted an easy opportunity in his teens and is now redeeming himself.

Yes, really.

And he wants to be more familiar with math for when the kidlets get to the point in their educational career that they could use a parent with a bit of mathematical know-how.

On a related note, I'm choosing to wait until the boys begin core French to reteach myself what I figure I've forgotten (nothing a few days in Paris wouldn't cure, heh).

But Mr Lannis' self-imposed mathematical ambition makes me feel he should be wearing a shirt that points to me and claims he's with stupid.

He also regularly chokes down food he despises the taste of, but knows is good for him.

Barf.

  1. I'm actually planning on letting Ian teach me long division when he gets to that point in school. I kinda failed to learn long division the year my parents divorced but somehow passed math anyway. I figure I taught him multiplication, it's only fair he returns the favour in a year or three. And yeah, I'm going to brush up on my French again when he starts that in grade four. I used to be able to read simple French stories but now I might catch one word in three.

Major kudos to Mr Lannis for stepping up to relearn what he's forgotten. Self-improvement is admirable!

  2. Barf, indeed. Tell him to keep his sense of responsibility and adultedness at home. I *will*, however, let him bring his raw eggs.

  3. I suppose I should be thankful *one* of us has a sense of responsibility and adultedness... heh.

  4. THAT is a great idea... I wonder if I can get R to teach me French...?

  5. Why not? I figure this way, you're reinforcing what he's learned by getting him to teach it to you, so it's good for both of you. :)

  6. *barf* to eating things that is good for you is hilarious. However, I have to admit that Mr. Lannis may be my new hero. I often bemoan having forgotten all the things I used to know, and wish that I had old school textbooks. *Especially* in math. I used to love algebra, for example.

I'm *so* getting the 'math for dummies' books.

  7. Oh, ChaplainChris1, I bemoan forgetting just about everything I used to know, so we're in the same boat. I used to write country-wide math contests in high school for fun (and came in the top 25th percentile in Canada for the Pascale contest for grade nines, might I add...), so... guess what I forgot? The Maths... haha! ;)
